In my interview “Travel and Personal Growth: Charlotte Tweed of Liberty Travel Coach on Why & How Traveling Can Help Us Become Better Human Beings,” I share insights on how travel fosters personal development and enriches lives.
Backstory and Career Journey
I grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan, Canada, developing an appreciation for the province’s vast, open landscapes and peaceful rural life. The sound of meadowlarks, the beauty of Saskatchewan’s sunsets, and the adventurous snow days of childhood are cherished recollections.

Despite the deep connection to my roots, I eventually found myself stuck in the monotony of an office job, working in human resources. A major restructuring left me without a role, and while the layoff initially felt like a loss of identity, it became a catalyst for transformation. Determined to pursue a more fulfilling path, I reflect on my passions—travel, the outdoors, and avoiding the confines of a desk job. This realization led me to enroll in a Travel & Tourism diploma program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.
Throughout this journey, my husband, Darryl, and son, Brandon, offered unwavering support. Their steadfast encouragement helped with navigating the challenges of returning to school as an adult. A most cherished memory was hearing Brandon proudly cheer for me at graduation, embodying my personal and professional rebirth.
Synopsis
As the founder of Liberty Travel Coach, I discuss the profound impact of travel on personal growth. Travel broadens perspectives, enhances open-mindedness, and fosters empathy by exposing individuals to diverse cultures and experiences. The importance of stepping out of your comfort zone is highlighted, as facing unfamiliar situations during travel leads to increased resilience and adaptability. Furthermore, travel encourages self-reflection, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your place in the world.

Key Points
- Broadening Horizons: Travel introduces you to new cultures, traditions, and ways of life, challenging preconceived notions and encouraging a more open-minded approach to differences.
- Stepping Out of Comfort Zones: Encountering unfamiliar environments and situations during travel pushes you to adapt, fostering resilience and personal growth.
- Fostering Empathy: Interacting with diverse communities allows travellers to develop empathy and understanding, leading to more compassionate perspectives.
- Encouraging Self-Reflection: Travel provides opportunities for introspection, helping you to reflect on your values, beliefs, and life goals.
- Enhancing Adaptability: Navigating travel challenges, such as language barriers or logistical issues, enhances problem-solving skills and adaptability.
Travel Can Help Us Become Better Human Beings
My insights underscore the transformative power of travel in personal development. By immersing yourself in different cultures and environments, you can challenge your assumptions and expand your worldviews. This exposure not only promotes open-mindedness but also cultivates understanding, as travellers gain firsthand appreciation of diverse perspectives.

Stepping out of your comfort zone is a recurring theme in the discussion. Travel inherently involves uncertainty and unpredictability, requiring you to adapt and problem-solve in real time. These experiences build resilience and confidence, qualities transferable to various aspects of life beyond travel.
Moreover, the self-reflective nature of travel allows you to pause and evaluate your personal values and aspirations. Away from routine environments, travellers often gain clarity on their priorities and life direction.
Travel is a catalyst for personal growth, offering invaluable lessons that contribute to becoming a more adaptable, empathetic, and self-aware individual.
