Read this before you travel or live abroad
I left Canada in June 2021 and wouldn’t trade this liberty lifestyle for the world. By providence, I am based in Mexico.
It takes a bit of adjustment to become an expat and work remotely from abroad. Here are a few things I wish I knew before getting on the road.
First: I wish we would have known the challenges involved while travelling during the pLandemic. Vaccine rollouts were just happening, mandates were on the horizon, and flights in Central America were a disaster to book and change. PCR tests were ridiculously expensive. If only there had been a coach to provide us guidance while putting our breakout plan from Canada together.
Second, visit the local coworking spaces. You’ll meet new people who are also remote workers and maybe even make friends for life. Establishing community with like-minded people is essential to warding off homesickness and assimilating into your new freedom lifestyle.
Number 3: I wish I would have known about the flexibility and affordability of SafetyWing global travel medical insurance. Unforeseen events can happen, like a medical emergency while abroad and expenses can be mind-blowing. It’s not easy to find affordable coverage and most importantly, a policy that can fit the flexible and unpredictable lifestyle of expats, especially if you are a digital nomad.
I love SafetyWing because their travel medical insurance was created by nomads for nomads. You can purchase a policy even if your trip has already started. You can pause and resume coverage with flexibility. 185 countries are covered, and you don’t need to let them know about your itinerary in advance. Perfect for people like me and for those who don’t know where they’ll be next month! Check out the SafetyWing website here.
